One of the many benefits of leasing onto CloudTrucks' Virtual Carrier authority means getting added to our group auto liability & cargo insurance. We charge an 18% lease-on & insurance fee, and 5% of that 18% goes towards that group auto liability & cargo insurance.
Here's what the 5% towards Liability Insurance includes:
Auto Liability Coverage ($1,500 deductible for each claim - regardless of fault)
- COI Required by every Broker to allow booking of loads
- Generally required by your finance company or leasing company
- Required for a carrier to remain an authority carrier with DOT# and MC#
- Coverage for “other parties” involved in an accident with a driver operating under CloudTrucks operating authority
- Coverage for injuries, PD & Property damage sustained by “other parties” in an accident
- Only covered while operating booked load under CloudTrucks DOT authority or while Deadheading directly to that dispatch
- No coverage while traveling home, bobtailing, operating truck for personal reasons, or operating the truck while under personal conveyance on the ELD.
- Subrogation for equipment damage or injuries to contractors is their sole responsibility
General Liability Insurance (No deductible)
- Covers non-accident related incidents of potential liability
- Generally for incidents occurring on the dock, at a customer’s facility, or at an Operating center owned or leased by the company
Cargo Insurance ($1,500 deductible on any paid claim)
- Coverage for carrier-related Cargo Claims
- The contractor is liable for “Driver related” OS&D up to the $1500
The 3 Other Required Insurances:
There are some insurances that you must be covered by at CloudTrucks as well. Two out of the three will be set up by your CloudTrucks onboarding specialist and paid for automatically through load deductions, so you don't need to worry about paying it or updating your documents. One of them is still your responsibility to purchase, keep current, and provide us with updated documentation. Here's what you need to know.
The 2 That We Handle Your Coverage and Billing for:
Non-Trucking Liability Insurance
- Must provide the same level of coverage you have under our Auto Liability Coverage
- Coverage for anytime you are not operating the truck/trailer under dispatch.
- Coverage must explicitly call out "NTL coverage" when not under dispatch but still attached to an empty trailer.
-
Bobtail insurance alone is not adequate coverage.
-
"Bobtailing" refers to driving just the tractor, without a trailer attached at all.
-
If a truck has an empty trailer, it's not bobtailing — it’s just pulling an empty (trailer) load or deadheading (depending on context).
-
Occupational Accident Insurance
- Covers injuries to your personal body sustained in the event of an accident
- CloudTrucks assumes no liability for any contractor’s medical expenses resulting from a work-related accident or incident (regardless of fault and regardless of Auto Liability claim)
- This insurance is in place to ensure that your medical expenses are covered and carrying Health insurance does not eliminate the need for Occupational Accident Insurance
- Needs $1 Million in coverage.
The 1 That You Need to Get Yourself :
Physical Damage Coverage for Truck
- Covers repairs or replacement of your owned or leased truck in the event of an accident.
- Must cover the full amount of equipment value.
- CloudTrucks assumes no liability for repairs to Contractor owned or leased equipment in the event of an accident or incident - We do not subrogate on your behalf.
- You can acquire this coverage through whichever insurance carrier you prefer, but we strongly recommend at least getting a quote from Reliance, our partner, as they generally have the best price. If you choose to cover your truck with PD insurance elsewhere, send your current certificate of insurance document (COI) to safety@cloudtrucks.com.
- Our Reliance CT account manager is Nathan Herron if you'd like to consider buying coverage through them. He can be reached at 615-850-5365.
Other Optional or Situation-Dependent Insurances:
Workman's Compensation (only required for W2 employees of fleet owners)
- “Employees” cannot be covered under Occupational Accident
- Please refer to State and local worker’s compensation programs to meet state requirements
- One of our partners, Reliance has a Worker's Compensation program
Trailer Physical Damage insurance
- Provided as a part of the weekly trailer deduction if you lease a trailer through CT
- $1,500 deductible required
- Does not cover Trailer Maintenance and damage repairs < $1500
- Does not cover towing and storage unless claim is filed for trailer damage
- If you have your own purchased/leased trailer, we need a COI with coverage for the value of your trailer.
Supplemental deductible protection policy (optional)
- Some insurance providers will offer a policy that covers the deductibles in the event of an accident that bridges multiple coverage policies
- An accident involving Cargo damage, Trailer damage and an auto liability claim has 3 deductibles of $1500 for each claim ($4500 total)
- Some drivers opt. to secure deductible coverage to avoid this level of financial liability in the event of an accident
- Towing and storage is not covered if the trailer is not damaged in an accident, even if the truck is totaled. These expenses can amount to tens of thousands of dollars with no coverage
- CloudTrucks is working with Reliance to develop a low cost deductible protection policy - This will be an optional policy. - will let you know when we have more information.
