At CloudTrucks, most drivers opt to rent a trailer through us, but we also allow drivers to onboard their own trailer (or a trailer rented elsewhere) instead. Whether you already own a trailer or are considering purchasing one, this guide will walk you through the process of onboarding your trailer.
1. Connect with Your CT Onboarding Specialist OR Business Consultant
If you haven't completed onboarding with CloudTrucks yet, make sure to let your onboarding specialist know that you'd like to onboard your own trailer rather than renting one through CT.
If you are already onboarded with us and interested in onboarding a trailer from outside the CT rental program, reach out to your CloudTrucks business consultant (BC). If you’re unsure how to contact them, request assistance from the CloudTrucks support team through the app’s in-app chat feature. You can ask them to have your BC contact you.
2. Trailer Requirements
Before onboarding your trailer, it must meet the following qualifications:
-
General Requirements:
-
The trailer must have physical damage insurance.
-
It requires a recent full DOT inspection (completed within the last 30 days) from an approved location such as Loves, TA, Pilot, or a certified dealership.
-
-
Trailers between 10-14 Years Old:
-
Provide multiple clear photos of the inside and outside of the trailer to verify its condition.
-

3. Shopping for a Trailer
If you’re in the process of purchasing a trailer and want to ensure it meets CloudTrucks’ requirements, follow these steps:
-
Email safety@cloudtrucks.com and CC your business consultant from the Customer Success team.
-
Include the following details:
-
Trailer unit information.
-
Pictures of the inside and outside.
-
Recent DOT inspection (if available from the seller).
-
4. Considering an Older Trailer?
Older trailers can sometimes lead to load refusals by brokers, or issues at facilities, which can negatively impact your revenue potential.
-
Recommendation: If your trailer is older and may affect your performance, consider selling it and purchasing a newer one or renting a trailer from CloudTrucks for better reliability.
5. Trailer Plates?
CloudTrucks’ plating program only covers tractors. Drivers are responsible for registering their own trailers.
6. Currently Renting a Trailer from CloudTrucks?
If you’re currently renting a trailer through CloudTrucks, you’ll need to return the rental before onboarding your own trailer. Contact our Trailer Operations team through:
-
In-app Chat: Select the "Trailers" option.
-
Phone/Text: 415-649-5956
-
Email: trailers@cloudtrucks.com
7. Ready to Onboard Your Trailer?
Once you’re ready to onboard your trailer, ensure you have the following:
-
Clean DOT Inspection:
-
Completed within the last 30 days at one of these locations:
-
Loves
-
TA
-
Pilot Flying J
-
Certified manufacturer repair facility or dealership (e.g., Volvo Dealership, Freightliner, Wabash Trailers).
-
-
-
Trailer Registration
-
Trailer Physical Damage Insurance certificate
- If trailer is between 10-14 years old, multiple clear photos of the inside and outside of the trailer to verify its condition to the Safety team.
8. Ongoing Trailer Responsibilities
If you supply your own trailer, you are responsible for the following ongoing requirements:
-
Paying for DOT trailer inspection costs.
-
Submitting clean DOT inspections every quarter (90 days).
-
Ensuring your trailer has the clean inspection sticker applied to it.
-
Uploading the inspection to your digital permit book in the CT App. Click here to learn more about the digital permit book feature and upload process.
By following this guide, you’ll ensure a smooth onboarding process for your trailer.
